Wizyta niemieckich badaczy kolekcji szachowej w Zamku w Kórniku
W dniach 13-14 sierpnia gościliśmy w progach naszego Zamku niemieckich badaczy dziejów królewskiej gry – szachów. Wizytę w zamkowej czytelni złożył dr Michael Johann Negele oraz Harry Schaack, którzy w trakcie dwudniowej wizyty zapoznali się ze znaczącą częścią naszej kolekcji szachowej. Szczególnym zainteresowaniem dr. Negele’a oraz redaktora Schaacka cieszył się rękopis o sygn. Sz 35 M (tzw. the Chapais-manuscript) – jeden z najcenniejszych pod kątem merytorycznym i estetycznym woluminów w kórnickich zbiorach szachowych. Niemieccy historycy poświęcili swoją uwagę nie tylko studiowaniu korespondencji Tassila von Heydebrand und der Lasa [(1818-1899), pruskiego dyplomaty zamieszkałego w Osiecznej, teoretyka gry w szachy], ale także zajmowali się XIX-wieczną prasą i drukami okolicznościowymi. W swoich poszukiwaniach skupili się również na materiałach, które staną się tematem debat towarzyszących obchodom 150-lecia powołania Deutscher Schachbund, ogólnoniemieckiej federacji szachowej.
Ponadto dr Negele przekazał w imieniu Herberta Bastiana bezcenny dar dla PAN Biblioteki Kórnickiej – publikację Chapais. Das revolutionäre Schachmanuskript von Gaspard Monge, zawierającą analizę wspomnianego wcześniej manuskryptu. Znajdująca się w zbiorach PAN Biblioteki Kórnickiej kolekcja szachowa stanowi ewenement na skalę europejską, gromadząc blisko 4000 egzemplarzy. W skład kolekcji wchodzą głównie materiały pochodzące ze spuścizny wspomnianego wcześniej Tassila von Heydebrand und der Lasa.
Dr Michael Johann Negele – jeden z czołowych współczesnych badaczy historii szachów, zasłużony członek Chess History and Literature Society oraz autor opracowań dotyczących niemieckiego szachisty Emanuela Laskera. Dr Negele współpracował z PAN Biblioteką Kórnicką, współorganizując w 2002 i 2007 r. wraz z pracownikami Biblioteki (zwłaszcza Marią Łuczak) międzynarodowe seminaria dotyczące historii szachów.
Harry Schaack – redaktor pisma „Karl. Das kulturelle Schachmagazin”, którego wybrane numery są dostępne w PAN Bibliotece Kórnickiej (sygn. Sz 3115 Cz).

On 13–14 August, we welcomed German researchers specialising in the history of the kings’ game – chess – to Kórnik Castle. Dr Michael Johann Negele and Harry Schaack visited the Castle’s reading room, where, during their two-day visit, they examined a large part of our chess library collection. Dr Negele and Mr Schaack took a particular interest in the manuscript with the following ID Sz 35 M (known as the Chapais manuscript) – one of the most valuable volumes in the Kórnik chess library collection, not only in terms of content but also aesthetics. The German historians focused not only on studying the correspondence of Tassil von Heydebrand und der Lasa [(1818–1899), a Prussian diplomat who lived in Osieczna, known for his work on chess theory], but also examined 19th-century press publications and ephemera. In their research, they also concentrated on materials that would become the topic of discussions accompanying the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Deutscher Schachbund, the German national chess federation.
Additionally, Dr Negele, on Herbert Bastian’s behalf, gave the Kórnik Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences a priceless gift – the publication Chapais. Das revolutionäre Schachmanuskript von Gaspard Monge, containing a detailed analysis of the previously mentioned manuscript. The chess library collection maintained by the Kórnik Library of Polish Academy of Sciences, is unique in Europe, featuring nearly 4,000 items. The collection mostly contains materials originating from the legacy of the earlier mentioned Tassil von Heydebrand und der Lasa.
Dr Michael Johann Negele – one of the most prominent scholars of chess history, a member of the Chess History and Literature Society, and the author of studies on the German chess player Emanuel Lasker. Dr Negele has worked with the Kórnik Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences, co-organising international seminars on the history of chess with the library’s team in 2002 and 2007.
